The Cook, the Farmer, His Wife and Their Neighbor

This project combines elements of visual art and social architecture to redefine the village green. New West Amsterdam was built after World War II and today constitutes one of the largest residential ‘urban renewal’ projects in Europe. During the 1980s, however, the district became a no man’s land, and in 2004 the city transferred ownership to housing corporations. There was no perception that the district’s open space had any value, however, until a group of young artists, designers, architects and community residents began a back-to-the-earth farming effort.
The participants view farming and cooking as a way for people to share knowledge and traditions, and as a path for cultural renewal and neighborhood rebirth. During the year in which the project developed the residents themselves became the most important people involved, and in September 2009 took over its management. They created a committee of eight people responsible for the kitchen and garden, and committed to actively continuing food production and cooking. In addition, the space serves as a location for workshops and neighborhood cultural programs. Altogether it functions as a core around which the community can engage in the process of “place-building”. A key value of this project is the sense of security that the community kitchen has brought to the residents.
The project demonstrates that the self-determination of residents in guiding the character of their city is not only desirable but feasible, even without their having any formal control of space. By reclaiming public space as part of a vibrant community, the participants not only endowed themselves with power and aroused their awareness of their rights, but empowered other communities to act in kind.
