Public Art Forum General Forum Documentary

In the evening of 13 April 2013, the International Award for Public Art Presentation Ceremony and Public Art Forum was held. Lewis Biggs, the president of Public Art Award jury, hosted the forum.

Prof. Wang Dawei, Dean of Fine Art College of Shanghai University, made concluding remark. He said,” After hearing all the speeches, I feel that there are three “needn’t worry” and one “need worry”.

“The first “needn’t worry” is there is no clear definition of public art. We are all in the discussion what public art is after all, what good public art is. I think it is now ill-defined, which brings us charm, and gives us unlimited imagination. So we needn’t find out what it really is.”

“The second “needn’t worry” is we have been speaking lack of democratic awareness and civic consciousness. What kind of human civilization does the information age bring to us? It is democratic civilization. Industrialized society brings us material civilization and information age brings us democratic civilization.

“The third “needn’t worry” is the cross-border cooperation problems with government, artists, businesses and others. The reason for this problem is the demand is not clear. When government has clear needs, or the business has clear needs, they will surely come together. So I don’t think we should worry about the above three tangled issues.

What I am worried is to pursue a unity. We are talking about internationalization and diversity all the time. Today we are sitting here to seek a unity. I don’t think there is a unity. We are promoting the development of public art, but not just want a single unity or seek a unity.

Now I want to say something as an organizer. Now I am making a self-criticism. We have not done well enough. The criticism will bring us progress. First, there were no one raising his hand when Mr. Rong Nianzeng asked who came from government and who came from business. We hold the forum within the small circle of universities, academes, which is the failure of the forum.

Second, we are discussing about public art now, but our forum organization itself is lack of public awareness. For example, the meeting room has a stage and the audience, which makes it difficult to communicate with each other. This is a kind of inertia and this inertia brings us no public. And we should make some improvements in our future work.

Last, I would like to say some hopes. Fine Arts College of Shanghai University organizes this forum, and we hope it can be sustained. This sustainment is a kind of mechanism and is not a kind of immobilized. As the organizer of this forum, I am presenting three expectations to Chairman Lewis. First, we hope there should be a good issue or topic for next forum. Second, there is a good working mechanism. The last we hope to provide a way or method to solve the problems for the locals.
