On April 12, 2013, at 4:00 PM, professor Lu Xiaobo, Dean of Academy of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University chaired the themed forum of “public art and the urban development". Professor Yang Qirui, Dean of College of Public Art ,the Art Academy of China was entitled "Thoughts on public art creation and education” speech. He pointed out: "cultural study and academic research on the public art, has been carrying-out in China for many years, and produced diverse and rich views on that. While the urbanization process, showing he features of 'dramatic change' in china."
Based on his experience of creation and teaching, Professor Yang introduced two public art projects, the "Jiu Qiang" (nine wall) in Hangzhou and "Kuan Alley and Zhai Alley"(Wide and narrow alley) in Chengdu. Professor Yang pointed out: "The urbanization process has the characteristics of the city renewal and historical area regeneration,. So my works are all about historical area regeneration. When the artists of my generation are involved in public art projects, we always want to put meaning and ideology in the works." The reason why we are doing this is to show full respect for the connections between art and urban space, the public, the local culture and independent spirit of artists. This also reflects the public art concept that “to give back to life and people whatever is taken and origins from them ". |
